People In Music History
Lully, Jean-Baptiste [originally Giovanni Battista Lulli] (1632-1687) Italian
-born composer who was taken in boyhood to France and first worked there as a
scullion, then as a violinist. Went into service of Louis XIV, 1652,
naturalized French, 1661; achieved the supreme musical position at court, 1662.
Himself a dancer, collaborated with Moliere in comedy ballets, including Le
Bourgeois Gentil-homme; from 1673 wrote operas including Alceste and Armida.
Wrote also church music, dance music, etc., and established the "French
Overture." A brilliant intriguer; obtained a monopoly of opera production in
France; made a fortune by speculation; injured his foot with the long staff he
used for beating time on the floor, and died of the resulting abscess.
